Steve Vining has been named president of Savoy Label Group, Nippon Columbia's U.S.-based jazz and classical division, home to classic recordings by Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, John Coltrane and others of the early bebop era.

Vining will report to Nippon Columbia president and CEO Jack Matsumura. Additionally, Steve Backer will join Savoy as vp jazz A&R. The move reunites Vining and Backer with Matsumura and Nippon Columbia chairman Strauss Zelnick, all of whom are former BMG executives.

"It's an incredibly august label with legendary recordings," Vining said, adding that his goal is to bring the label's recordings to as wide an audience as possible through tiered pricing and other marketing initiatives.

Vining will be responsible for fleshing out the new label division as well as developing new artists. In related news, Nippon Columbia on Thursday announced a revitalization plan and lowered its outlook for fiscal 2001 to compensate for restructuring costs.
